While Georgia House Democrats Help Pass Federal Voting Rights Bill, Georgia Republicans Double Down on Anti-Voting Campaign

March 4, 2021

Yesterday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 1, a sweeping voting rights bill that would make it easier to vote and prevent the same kinds of obstacles to voting that Republicans are currently pushing through the Georgia state legislature.

The legislation passed with the support of all Georgia House Democrats – Reps. Sanford Bishop, Carolyn Bourdeaux, Hank Johnson, Lucy McBath, David Scott, and Nikema Williams. Meanwhile, Georgia House Republicans remained in lockstep with their party’s commitment to limit access to the ballot box and unanimously opposed the voting rights bill.

“With Republicans hellbent on restricting voting access at the state level, this federal legislation is crucial to protect the sacred right to vote that so many like John Lewis fought for,” said Scott Hogan, Executive Director of the Democratic Party of Georgia. “While Georgia Republicans continue to push for burdensome restrictions that make it harder for Georgians to vote, Georgia Democrats are working to carry on the legacy of heroes like Congressman Lewis and protect the integrity of elections by ensuring every Georgian’s voice is heard in our democratic process. H.R. 1 is an extension of that ongoing pursuit towards equality and justice.”
