STATEMENT: Georgia Republicans Threatening to Crush Georgians with Government Shutdown

Today, MAGA House Republicans – including Georgia House Republicans like Marjorie Taylor Greene, Buddy Carter, and Andrew Clyde – continue to threaten Georgians’ livelihoods with a looming government shutdown as their party spirals further into chaos over their extreme agenda. In response, DPG spokesperson Ellie Schwartz released the following statement:

“It’s shameful that while Georgia Democrats are working in lockstep to deliver for Georgia families, Georgia Republicans –Marjorie Taylor Greene, Buddy Carter, Drew Ferguson, Rich McCormick, Austin Scott, Andrew Clyde, Mike Collins, Barry Loudermilk, and Rick Allen – are risking Georgians’ livelihoods with a devastating government shutdown in pursuit of their extreme agenda. Republicans are forcing families to brace for two extremes: a government shutdown that would devastate Georgians; or extreme cuts that would raise costs and slash funding for child care, schools, veteran services, and more. 

“Make no mistake: if the government shuts down, leaving thousands of Georgians without the paychecks or services they rely on, Georgia Republicans like Marjorie Taylor Greene, Buddy Carter, and Andrew Clyde will be squarely to blame.”

Georgia Republicans’ government shutdown would be devastating for Georgians:

• Nearly 64,000 Georgia service members could be forced to work without pay
  
• Over 167,000 Georgians who are federal civilian employees could be forced to work without pay
  
• More than 220,000 Georgia mothers, infants and children could lose WIC benefits they need to keep food on the table
• Georgia seniors who rely on Social Security Administration services could see their support delayed
• Disability payments for Georgia veterans could be halted
• Essential medical research into diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer’s could be stalled, and more.
