Sequestration Impact for Georgia

February 25, 2013

The impact of sequestration on the state of Georgia is severe.

President Obama has committed to controlling our nation’s debt in a balanced way. The President’s plan reduces the deficit by $4 trillion total, and includes thoughtful spending cuts while also asking that the wealthiest Americans pay their fair share. It’s the best way to make our nation stronger.

Key facts about the sequester’s impact in Georgia include:

  • Our state would lose $28.6 million in funding for primary and secondary education, putting nearly 40o teacher and aide jobs at risk. About 80 fewer schools would receive funding.
  • Head Start would be eliminated for 1,700 children in Georgia, reducing access to critical early education.
  • 37,000 Georgia civilian jobs in the Department of Defense would be furloughed, devastating military base communities around Columbus, Savannah and elsewhere.
  • Over 4,000 fewer Georgia children would receive vaccines for diseases like measles, mumps, and whooping cough.
