On First Day of RNC, Georgia Democrats Slam Trump’s Chaos Presidency

August 24, 2020

ATLANTA — Today, on the first day of the Republican National Convention, Democratic Party of Georgia Chairwoman Nikema Williams released the following statement on Trump’s chaotic presidency:

“Donald Trump’s dangerous, failed presidency has led to compounded crises of public health, economic collapse, and racial injustice that is endangering lives and livelihoods of working families across our country. Trump’s self-laudatory celebration this week can’t erase 170,000 lives lost under his watch, or bring back the jobs of the many Americans that have become unemployed while Trump cratered our economy. American families are grieving and looking for answers, but all this administration can give them is broken promise after broken promise.

We know that our working families will be in good hands with Joe Biden, who sees and hears every one of us, and who will lift us up, not tear us down. Our country’s future is on the line this November — and Georgia is ready to stand with Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.”

All week long, Georgia Democrats will be highlighting how Trump’s failed leadership and chaotic presidency has left Georgians in crisis. Here are some of the ways Trump has left our nation in chaos:

  • Trump’s failed handling of coronavirus has now caused over 5,000 Georgia coronavirus deaths and over 250,000 cases as Georgia has the highest new infection rate in the country. Trump has no plan to contain the virus as other countries around the world return to normal.
  • With no real plan to safely return kids to school, Trump is risking the lives of teachers and students, and has forced parents into a childcare emergency as he scaled back paid leave and cut unemployment benefits.
  • More than 600,000 Georgians filed for unemployment in June and more than 110,000 American small businesses have closed for good in this economic crisis, while the Trump administration sent hundreds of millions in aid to large corporations.
  • In the middle of the global pandemic that he has made worse for Americans, Trump continues to try and repeal the Affordable Care Act, which covers 20 million Americans and over one million Georgians. If he wins, insurance companies would be able to reject coverage for pre-existing conditions for over 1.8 million Georgians, in the middle of a global pandemic.
