NEW STUDY: Biden’s ‘Rapid COVID-19 Vaccine Rollout Saved Nearly 300,000 Lives’

July 8, 2021

Study Shows That Biden’s Swift Vaccine Strategy Also Prevented Up to 1.25 Million Hospitalizations

A new study from the Commonwealth Fund found that President Joe Biden’s robust vaccination program saved nearly 300,000 American lives and prevented 1.25 million hospitalizations across the country. The study estimates that COVID-19 deaths would have jumped to 4,500 each day during a second “2021 spring surge” without the Biden-Harris administration’s aggressive vaccination push.

The study comes as First Lady Dr. Biden visits Savannah with Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock and Mayor Van Johnson in the latest stop of the Biden-Harris administration’s nationwide push to reach millions of Americans who still need protection against the virus and urge communities to get vaccinated.

“We have President Biden’s historic vaccination rollout and Democrats’ American Rescue Plan to thank for saving thousands of Americans’ and Georgians’ lives. Under Biden and Democrats’ leadership, over 8 million vaccine shots have been administered in Georgia, and several counties across the Peach State are seeing 0 new COVID-19 cases,” said Rhyan Lake, spokeswoman for the Democratic Party of Georgia.“Yet, neither Brian Kemp nor a single Georgia Republican supported the historic American Rescue Plan that provided resources for this unprecedented public health effort. Though Georgia Republicans will try to take credit for our return to normalcy, it’s clear that the Biden administration and Georgia Democrats are to thank for the tremendous progress our state has made in beating the pandemic and the continued work to make sure every Georgian gets vaccinated.”

Key highlights from the study

  • Without Biden’s vaccination program, there would have been approximately 279,000 additional deaths and up to 1.25 million additional hospitalizations by the end of June 2021.
  • The United States’ rapid vaccine rollout helped prevent a spring surge of 4,500 daily COVID-19 deaths.
  • With a vaccination program achieving only half the pace of vaccination, there would have been more than 450,000 additional hospitalizations.
  • The swift and early rollout of Biden’s vaccine strategy “played a critical role in curtailing the pandemic.”
