October 29, 2018

ATLANTA — Today, the Democratic Party of Georgia released a new ad featuring Georgians from across the state expressing why Brian Kemp is reckless, irresponsible, and can’t be trusted. They reference Kemp’s history of troubling behavior, including pointing a shotgun at a teenager and defaulting on a $500,000 loan.

The ad, “Yup,” can be viewed here.

For Brian Kemp, suit over bad loan reveals political, financial perils, Alan Judd, AJC, 9/21/18

At 9 a.m. on July 19, Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp sat in his lawyer’s office in Carrollton. In just five days, the state’s Republicans would choose either Kemp or Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle as their candidate for governor. The race was widely viewed as a toss-up. But Kemp would be stuck in Carrollton for the next two hours and 27 minutes, trying to explain, under oath, why he shouldn’t have to repay a $500,000 loan.

By the time his deposition concluded, Kemp had answered “I don’t recall,” “I don’t remember,” “I don’t know,” or some variation at least 91 times.

Even though Knox pleaded guilty to criminal battery and the victim believed the state would take action, nothing happened. On top of that, the state agency allowed Knox to renew his license in 2014 before it lapsed without any action by the board in 2016

Kemp said, “Justice is being done. It’s going through the process.”

He said licensing board members “have the regulatory authority over the boards … we do the administrative work for the licensing boards,” and the state attorney general represents them in any prosecutions.

VO: Brian Kemp pointed a shotgun at a teenager. Who does that? “Georgia governor candidate aims gun at teen in campaign ad. ‘Get over it,’ he tells critics,” Samantha Schmidt, Washington Post, 5/2/2018

Now, a new ad in the race for Georgia governor — in which a candidate points a gun at a teenager — did not sit well with some Georgians. After all, it aired just one state away from the Florida high school where 17 people were killed in a mass shooting

In the campaign ad, Brian Kemp, Georgia’s secretary of state, sits in a room surrounded by firearms — handguns on a table to his right, rifles on the table in front of him, and what appear to be two AR-15-style guns leaning on the wall behind him. Across his lap he holds a double-barrel shotgun, cleaning it off as he speaks into the camera. Next to him sits a young man in khakis and a tucked-in flannel shirt.

Kemp then closes the gun, as if it was ready to fire, pointing it toward the teenager.
