NEW AD: Brian Kemp Can’t Be Trusted After Failing Georgians for Decades

October 30, 2018

ATLANTA — Today, the Democratic Party of Georgia released a new ad highlighting Kemp’s decades of failing Georgians. In his many years in the public eye, Kemp has shown that he cannot be trusted to keep Georgians safe, protect those with pre-existing conditions, or even do his job as Secretary of State—which is why he should resign, and cannot be trusted in higher office.

The ad, “20 Years,” can be viewed here.

SCRIPT:

Twenty years of Brian Kemp’s politics. Twenty-six sexual assault victims…disregarded by Kemp. Millions of Georgians with pre-existing conditions…Kemp would deny them coverage. Defaulting on a half-million dollar loan—stiffing farmers on millions. Kemp’s actions…the AJC reports a possible felony. Now, Kemp’s been caught campaigning using our tax dollars. And who knows what else… Georgia, we just can’t trust Brian Kemp.

But the state licensing agency charged with protecting the public, the Georgia Board of Massage Therapy, did nothing after she complained. He’s now working at another spa.

Such outcomes are typical when it comes to massage therapy and sexual misconduct allegations in Georgia.

Twenty-five of the 26 sexual misconduct complaints lodged with the state over the past three years resulted in zero public disciplinary action — no license revocations, no license suspensions, no therapists placed on probation, no reprimands, an investigation by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution found.

Miller’s is not the only case to be seemingly disregarded by Kemp’s office. As the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported in May in an article titled When Massage Therapists Cross the Line, the State Board Rarely Acts, “Twenty-five out of 26 sexual misconduct complaints lodged with the state over the past three years resulted in zero public disciplinary action — no license revocations, no license suspensions, no therapists placed on probation, no reprimands.”

“The Jolt: Going to the mattresses over health care,” Jim Galloway, Greg Bluestein and Tamar Hallerman, The Atlanta Journal Constitution, 9/10/18

The Democratic Party of Georgia is targeting Kemp’s 2005 support for Senate Bill 174, a measure that would have eliminated some of the conditions that insurance companies are required to cover in Georgia.

It passed the chamber despite objections from bipartisan critics who said it would make optional some coverage, such as mastectomy treatment and women’s contraceptives.

….

Then-Republican state Sen. Seth Harp called it a “stinking dead horse.” State Sen. Renee Unterman of Buford, then the only woman in the GOP caucus, voted against it every time. (On the other side of that coin, Casey Cagle, Kemp’s rival in the July primary runoff, was then a state senator from Gainesville and voted in favor of the legislation.)

“Kemp Reiterates Opposition To Medicaid Expansion, Obamacare,” Brian Kemp News Release, 1/22/2018

With talks of expanding Medicaid swirling at the State Capitol, conservative businessman and Secretary of State Brian Kemp released the following statement:

“I oppose Medicaid expansion, Obamacare, and government-run healthcare,” said Kemp. “I always have and I always will.”

But Kemp would be stuck in Carrollton for the next two hours and 27 minutes, trying to explain, under oath, why he shouldn’t have to repay a $500,000 loan.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Brian Kemp has downplayed his involvement with a company that failed to pay a $500,000 loan he guaranteed.

“For Brian Kemp, suit over bad loan reveals political, financial perils,” Alan Judd, The Atlanta Journal constitution, 9/21/2018

Those documents show that even after he became secretary of state in 2010, Kemp remained active in his myriad business ventures, including AgStrong. He has played a central role through much of the company’s 10-year history: He signed real estate and loan documents that identified him, at various times, as AgStrong’s assistant manager and corporate secretary.

His $750,000 investment initially amounted to a one-quarter stake in the company and still accounts for 8 percent of its privately held shares. And he personally negotiated for the $500,000 loan now at the heart of litigation, as well as an earlier $600,000 loan from the same lender.

It also owed farmers millions of dollars. When AgStrong couldn’t pay in full, federal agriculture officials suspended its license…

possible ‘felony’”

AJC, 10.3.18

“At company Brian Kemp backed, unpaid debt and possible ‘felony’,” Alan Judd, The Atlanta Journal Constitution, 10/3/2018

When it needed a loan, Hart AgStrong, a grain processor partly owned by Republican gubernatorial candidate Brian Kemp, put up as collateral thousands of bushels of canola and sunflower seeds. The problem was, AgStrong didn’t own them.

Later, AgStrong used an insurance settlement from two fires at its plant in northeast Georgia to pay the same lender — not the farmers whose grain had been destroyed.

The company’s actions “may be a felony under Georgia law,” an attorney for the state Department of Agriculture wrote to AgStrong in April. The letter threatened to revoke AgStrong’s licenses to do business with Georgia farmers, collect a $70,000 fine, and liquidate the company’s assets to compensate farmers.

Brian Kemp has had a busy week on his bus tour with 27 counties Monday through Friday and some days from 7:30 a.m. until at least 4:30 p.m.

So when does that leave him time to do his taxpayer-funded job as Secretary of State?

“Kemp says he’s doing his job while running for Georgia governor,” Mark Niesse, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 10/19/18

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reviewed Kemp’s public calendar, access badge records and campaign schedule to find out how frequently he has worked while campaigning.

Kemp’s calendar showed appointments on 61 days this year through August, including speeches to Rotary Clubs, appearances at business openings and meetings about Georgia’s election system. There are many days with no appointments listed.

However, the records show that the average number of days per month that Kemp swiped his badge declined by about half since he announced his campaign March 31, 2017, according to data from October 2014 through August of this year. Kemp used his badge an average of nine days monthly before the campaign and just under five days monthly since, including just one day each in May and June.
