ICYMI: Buddy Carter Defends Disastrous GOP 30% Sales Tax Proposal That Would Slam Working Georgians

January 27, 2023

This week, Georgia GOP Rep. Buddy Carter attempted to defend the Republican tax hike he is spearheading that would heavily burden working Georgians while helping ultra-wealthy tax cheats. The massive 30% sales tax would disproportionately hit the middle class, steeply hiking prices on everyday goods from groceries to clothing. The proposal would also abolish the IRS, helping corporations and the ultra-wealthy skirt paying their fair share of taxes. It’s all part of the new GOP House majority’s disastrous economic agenda, which would “slash seniors’ retirement benefits and hold hostage the nation’s finances.”

“The fact that Buddy Carter and Republicans think that a 30% sales tax is a good idea shows just how out of touch the GOP is with working families,” said Ellie Schwartz, spokesperson for the Democratic Party of Georgia. “With an economic agenda that would slam the middle class while letting the ultra-wealthy off the hook – not to mention putting Social Security and Medicaid at risk – Republicans are once again showing Georgians exactly who they are and who they’ll stand up for.”

Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Buddy Carter’s national sales tax bill draws spotlight, derision

Key Points

  • When Georgia U.S. Rep. Buddy Carter announced earlier this month that he had reintroduced legislation to create a national sales tax replacing the federal income tax, he didn’t expect it to become the latest political hot potato in Washington.
  • The news that the sales tax legislation could make it to the House floor has drawn criticism from Democrats, including President Joe Biden. In a speech Thursday in Virginia, he criticized Carter’s legislation by saying it was part of a dangerous economic agenda pushed by congressional Republicans.
  • “They want to impose a 30% national sales tax on everything from food, clothing, school supplies, housing, cars,” the president said. “The whole deal: 30%. You think I’m joking. If I didn’t see it, I wouldn’t believe it.”
  • But it’s not just Democrats who are cold to Carter’s bill. Even McCarthy himself has said he’s not in favor of the legislation.
