Georgia Republicans Ramping Up Misinformation and Conspiracy Theories Ahead of Trump Visit To Perry

September 23, 2021

With Donald Trump set to visit the Peach State for the first time since before the Senate runoff elections, Republicans are rehashing conspiracy theories about Georgia’s free and fair elections – previewing what Georgians are likely to hear from the former president at his far-right rally this weekend. Promoting the Big Lie over any other issue has “has fast become a bizarre litmus test for Republicans looking to prove their loyalty to former President Trump and appeal to his portion of the GOP base.”

At an event in Marietta yesterday with Donald Trump Jr., lieutenant governor candidate Burt Jones reiterated his call to convene a special legislative session to investigate the 2020 election, fanning the flames of debunked conspiracy theories despite the fact that numerous audits, recounts, and investigations have confirmed a secure, fair election. Meanwhile, a congressional candidate in a crowded Republican House primary is spreading misinformation through campaign materials – issuing yard signs with a “Trump Won” slogan. All of this comes on the heels of the former president’s recent letter to the Georgia Secretary of State with yet another ludicrous request to decertify the 2020 presidential election.

“As the former president visits the Peach State this weekend, Georgia Republicans’ 2022 campaign message to voters is clear – it’s Trump over everything,” said Rebecca Galanti, spokesperson for the Democratic Party of Georgia. “The GOP has become so caught up in Trump loyalty tests that they’re completely out of touch with the issues that actually matter to Georgians – access to health care, good-paying jobs, our children’s education, and getting the pandemic under control. Come November 2022, voters will remember that while Republicans remain preoccupied with re-litigating past elections, Democrats are staying laser-focused on the future and delivering for everyday Georgians.”
