Georgia Families to Receive Third Round of Child Tax Credits This Week, No Thanks to a Single Georgia Republican

September 13, 2021

This Wednesday, September 15, 91% of Georgia families with children will begin receiving the third installment of tax cuts from the expanded Child Tax Credit program encompassed in President Biden and Democrats’ American Rescue Plan — passed no thanks to Georgia Republicans, who unanimously opposed the historic legislation responsible for getting the economy back on track. The middle-class tax cuts will provide monthly relief of up to $1,600 per child to the families of more than 2.2 million children in Georgia through December.

Despite Republicans’ best efforts to obstruct the tax cuts from reaching Georgia families in need, child hunger dropped 24 percent nationwide since the distribution of the first round of tax cuts in July. Experts predict that the child tax credit program will reduce the state’s overall child poverty rate from 13.6% to 5.9% and that the Black child poverty rate will decrease even further from 21.8% to 11.4%. Last week, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that the tax cuts are helping families across the Peach State remain in their homes, pay utility bills and back rent, buy groceries and school supplies, and cover other expenses.

“It cannot be understated how impactful President Biden’s middle-class tax cuts have proven to be for children and families across Georgia as parents use the tax credits to keep the lights on in their homes, put clothes on their kids’ backs, and put food on the table,” Rhyan Lake, spokeswoman for the Democratic Party of Georgia, said. “If any Georgia Republicans had their way, from Brian Kemp to the entire GOP Senate field, millions of Georgia families would not be receiving these life-changing tax cuts. But thanks to Georgians going to the ballot box in November and January, the President and Democrats are building our economy back from the bottom up and the middle out, and it’s working.”
