#GASEN Week in Review: Trump Bolsters Walker’s Potential Senate Run, Voting History Plagues GOP Candidates, and Republican Infighting Intensifies in Messy Georgia Primary

August 20, 2021

It was another messy week for Georgia Republicans as Donald Trump’s political operation released a poll propping up Herschel Walker’s potential U.S. Senate bid, GOP primary candidates faced scrutiny of their voting and residency histories, and Republican infighting intensified. Here’s the latest:

  • Donald Trump’s Save America PAC released a new survey arguing that Herschel Walker — the former president’s hand-picked candidate for U.S. Senate in Georgia — remains the heavy favorite to claim the GOP nomination if he enters the race.
  • Voting histories and residency issues continue to plague the Republican candidates. This week, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution broke the news that GOP candidate Latham Saddler — a self-proclaimed “authentic conservative” and “lifelong Republican” — was originally a registered Democrat and voted in the 2004 Democratic presidential primary. The Washington Examiner reported in July that Trump-tapped Herschel Walker didn’t actually vote in 2016, and this week the Associated Press revealed that the Georgia Secretary of State’s office has opened an investigation into Walker’s wife following an AJC report that found she voted in Georgia’s presidential election last fall, even though the couple lives in Texas and claims a lucrative homestead tax exemption on their primary residence.
  • Meanwhile, Rep. Buddy Carter’s hometown newspaper believes he’s “unfit to hold public office — noting that Carter has become a “public menace” intent on stoking “fear and division” with his anti-science, anti-mask rhetoric. As the Savannah Morning News remarks: “Those who write checks to [Carter’s] campaign and pay to attend his fundraisers need to recognize who and what they are associating themselves with: an elected official who sold his soul for power rather than purpose.” Carter has repeatedly noted that he’ll join the GOP primary if Trump’s hand-picked candidate Herschel Walker bows out.
