DSCC & Georgia Democrats Announce Victory Over Multiple GOP Lawsuits to Restrict Voting Rights in Georgia’s Senate Runoff Elections

Federal Judges Dismiss Desperate, Last-Minute Voter Suppression Efforts From Loeffler, Perdue and Republican Allies

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) and the Democratic Party of Georgia announced two legal victories today in our efforts to defend the voting rights of Georgians from Republican attacks in the Senate runoff elections. In two rulings on Thursday, federal judges rejected desperate, last-minute GOP lawsuits to restrict voting rights.

A federal judge rejected a lawsuit filed by Senators Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue, the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), and the Georgia Republican Party that sought to change procedures around absentee ballot processing. Another federal judge rejected a request from Republicans to eliminate absentee ballot drop boxes, prohibit local election officials from opening ballot envelopes ahead of Election Day, and invalidate absentee ballot guidance from the Secretary of State. The DSCC and DPG intervened in these lawsuits to push back on the GOP’s “extraordinary” voter suppression efforts ahead of January’s runoff election.

“This is a win for voter participation, and the courts were right to reject these desperate and undemocratic efforts from Senators Loeffler, Perdue and their allies to disenfranchise Georgians who are eager to vote in the runoffs,” said DSCC Executive Director Scott Fairchild. “These rulings will block new Republican barriers to the ballot box and help ensure that every eligible Georgia voter can make their voices heard in these two Senate elections.”

“Georgia voters deserve every opportunity to make their voices heard in these important runoffs, and today’s wins will help protect our democracy,” said DPG Executive Director Scott Hogan. “We will continue to fight tooth and nail against Republicans’ blatant attacks on our democracy, and continue our work to elect leaders who will expand and protect voting rights, not disenfranchise voters.”
