DPG Marks One Year Of Georgia Republicans’ Extreme Abortion Ban

July 20, 2023

Today, as Georgia marks one year since Georgia Republicans’ extreme six-week abortion ban went into effect, Congresswoman Nikema Williams, Chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia, released the following statement:

“A year ago today, Georgia Republicans’ extreme six-week abortion ban ripped away Georgians’ reproductive freedom, outlawing abortion before most women even realize they are pregnant.

“Georgians have been grappling with the devastating impacts of Republicans’ extreme abortion ban for a full year now. In a state with already one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the country – especially for Black women – Republicans’ criminalization of life-saving reproductive health care has made the crisis worse. And the stakes are about to get even higher: GOP candidates running for president in 2024 have promised to sign a national abortion ban, ensuring that nowhere will be safe for abortion access.

“Let’s be clear – reproductive freedom is on the ballot again in 2024. But Georgia Democrats will not rest in the fight to elect pro-choice leaders, from the state legislature to the White House, until we have guaranteed Georgians’ affirmative right to make their own health care decisions.”
