Democrats Pass Bill to Protect Voting Rights in Georgia, Nationwide

August 24, 2021

Today, Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives – including Georgia Representatives Sanford Bishop, Carolyn Bourdeaux, Hank Johnson, Lucy McBath, David Scott, and Nikema Williams – passed H.R. 4, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, to protect the right to vote for every Georgian and all Americans.

Amid Republicans’ calculated voter suppression campaign in Georgia and across the country, H.R. 4 would restore the power of the Voting Rights Act by re-imposing guardrails to stop discriminatory voting laws like SB 202.

“With Georgia and states across the country facing the worst voter suppression since Jim Crow, federal voting rights legislation like H.R. 4 is more urgent than ever. The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act will preserve the sacred right to vote for which so many heroes like the late Congressman John Lewis risked their lives — and I know he would be proud that Georgia Democrats led the way in fighting for this crucial legislation,” said Congresswoman Nikema Williams, Chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia. “While it is absolutely shameful that not one House Republican supported this bill, Georgia Democrats remain committed to defending the right to vote, and we will not rest until all Georgia voters can make their voices heard in our democracy. I now urge Senators from both sides of the aisle to come together to honor the memory of Congressman Lewis and get this bill to the president’s desk.“
