Democratic Party of Georgia Statement on School Shooting in Uvalde, Texas

May 27, 2022

As news continues to unfold regarding the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas and tragic murders of twenty-one children and teachers, Congresswoman Nikema Williams, Chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia, issues the following statement:

“I am devastated by the senseless murder of nineteen children and two teachers in Uvalde, Texas. My heart breaks for every family that sent their baby to school Tuesday morning and didn’t see them come home.

“As a mother, I’m heartbroken and shaken. But as a member of Congress, I am angry – angry that the Republican Party is standing in the way of action on gun safety even in the face of our babies being slaughtered at school.

“Now is not the time to offer empty statements or platitudes. Our grief must be met with action to prevent this tragedy from happening to another family, in Georgia or across the nation. The Democratic Party is ready to enact common-sense gun laws that will help prevent more unthinkable tragedies like this one. We can make life-saving changes, but it takes leaders who are willing to do the right thing. We already know that Brian Kemp won’t do it – he’s already embraced the laws that make it easier for criminals to carry hidden, loaded weapons in our communities. Preventing gun violence is a policy choice, and Democrats will fight tooth and nail to elect leaders who will work to move Georgia in the right direction on gun safety.”
