Democratic Party of Georgia Statement on Conviction in Federal Hate Crimes Trial of Murderers of Ahmaud Arbery

February 22, 2022

Today, after the murderers of Ahmaud Arbery were found guilty of additional federal hate crime charges, Congresswoman Nikema Williams, Chair of the Democratic Party, released the following statement:

“Today, as we prepare to mark two years since Ahmaud Arbery’s murder, I am grateful that the legal system added another level of accountability for what we all saw with our own eyes – that Ahmaud was killed in cold blood for nothing more than jogging while Black. Though this verdict offers additional closure, it will not bring back Ahmaud or the countless other lives we’ve lost at the hands of hate. We now must continue working to fight the systemic racism so prevalent in our society, and hold accountable those in power who attempted to sweep this horrific crime under the rug. There cannot be true justice until no person’s life is cut short due to bigotry or reckless vigilantism.”
