WHAT GEORGIANS ARE SEEING: Calls For Investigation Into Herschel Walker Lies About Georgia Residency

November 29, 2022

Yesterday, a new complaint called on Georgia authorities, “to probe whether Republican Senate hopeful Herschel Walker violated the law by receiving a tax break on his Texas home meant for primary residents of that state even as he runs for federal office in Georgia.”

See for yourself what Georgians are seeing:

WSB Atlanta:

  • WSB Anchor: “Georgia Democrats are asking the state to have a closer look at Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker’s residency in Georgia. Tax records show that he claimed a homestead exemption on his place in Texas.”
  • Richard Elliot: “In Texas, you reportedly can only claim a homestead exemption for your primary residence. Of course, if you’re running for US senator from Georgia, that primary residence cannot be in Texas. Today, the Democratic Party of Georgia says it is asking the Attorney General and the GBI to take a closer look at all of this.
  • “Republican challenger Herschel Walker was in Toccoa Georgia Monday rallying his supporters to go to the polls and vote. Walker made no mention of the published reports.
  • “The tax records show he claimed a homestead exemption on the house he owns in Texas. Walker lived in Texas for years before returning to Georgia to run for Senate. Texas law states those exemptions can only be made for primary residences.
  • Monday, the Democratic Party of Georgia weighed in, asking the state Attorney General and the GBI to take a closer look. State party chair Congresswoman Nikema Williams said, quote, “The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Georgia Attorney General’s office must investigate whether Herschel Walker lied about being a Georgia resident.”
  • Richard Elliot: “We did reach out to multiple people with the Walker campaign for comment on all this. We have not received one yet.”

MSNBC

  • MSNBC Anchor: “State investigators are being urged to probe whether Republican Senate hopeful Herschel Walker violated the law by receiving a tax break on his Texas home meant for primary residents of that state even as he runs for federal office in Georgia. How might this impact Walker?”
  • Patricia Murphy, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution: “Along with character and competence the Warnock campaign is also pushing this message “and by the way he doesn’t even live here and he still claims a homestead exemption in Texas. [This] reinforces this notion that he only came back to Georgia not to live here and not to serve the state but really just to run for higher office.”

WJCL News Savannah:

  • WJCL Anchor: “Republican challenger Herschel Walker is under fire for taking a tax break intended for a primary residence on a home that he owns in Dallas. Experts say that Walker saved 1500 dollars and most likely broke tax rules in Georgia.”

 CNN

  • Tia Mitchell, The Atlanta Journal Constitution: “We all know that he moved from Texas to Georgia just to launch this campaign. Prior to that he was living in Texas. […] Like with many of his other controversies, it’s not his base that might be thwarted by that, but those relatively small number of voters that are in the middle in Georgia but that can sway a close election. They are the ones who are constantly saying ‘we don’t know if we can trust this guy, we don’t know if he’s ready to represent us in Washington.’”

MSNBC

  • Sarah Riggs Amico: “It’s embarrassing for the Georgia Republicans that they had to go out of state to recruit a candidate that they thought could take on Senator Warnock. […] I don’t think that Georgia voters are going to be fooled by this. Time and again the Senator has delivered for our state and time and again Herschel Walker has shown us he’s not ready. This is not a tough contest, he should go back to Texas and maybe one day he will have a chance to run for office there, but he is certainly not ready to represent the people of Georgia.

CNN Tonight:

Kasie Hunt, CNN: “The former football star is set to get a tax break on his Texas home; a tax break that is only reserved for Texas residents. Now, while this raises some legal questions clearly about whether he’s following Texas tax law, Walker’s fair problem — at least in this moment —may be the political fallout just 13 days out from the runoff. ”
