Georgia Congressional Republicans Vote to Take Away Health Care From 24 Million Americans, 4,316,000 Georgians With Pre-existing Conditions at Risk of Losing Coverage

Atlanta, GA – Today, Georgia’s Republican Congressional Delegation voted to strip health care from 24 million Americans to pay for a $600 billion tax cut for millionaires and billionaires. If Trumpcare becomes law, seniors will be saddled with higher premiums. Further, 4,316,000 Georgians with pre-existing conditions—including those with cancer, children with disabilities, and those who are pregnant—will at best see higher premiums and at worst complete loss of health care coverage. Democratic Party of Georgia Chair DuBose Porter issued the following statement.

“This is abominable, and I cannot comprehend how these nine men will sleep at night knowing they just tipped the delicate scales of life and death matters. Obamacare saved the lives of millions, improved the quality of life for millions more, and gave families the peace-of-mind that comes with having access to affordable health care. The GOP should know that this is not the end, it’s only the beginning. They will be held accountable.” – DuBose Porter, Democratic Party of Georgia Chair

The bill is so dangerous that GOP legislators even exempted themselves.

Trumpcare’s impact on Georgians with pre-existing conditions is catastrophic. The Center for American Progress has calculated the number of Georgians with pre-existing conditions by Congressional District. All nine Georgia GOP Congressmen voted in favor of putting these Georgians at risk:

Earl L. “Buddy” Carter (GA-1) –  306,701

Drew Ferguson, IV (GA-3) – 299,400

Rob Woodall (GA-7) –  355,000

Austin Scott (GA-8) –  284,600

Doug Collins (GA-9) –  292,100

Jody B. Hice (GA-10) –  302,600

Barry Loudermilk (GA-11) –  328,200

Rick W. Allen (GA-12) –  293,200

Tom Graves (GA-14) –  285,700

Before Obamacare, insurance companies had license to deny coverage or charge higher premiums by defining pregnancy, sexual assault, drug addiction, cancer, diabetes, asthma and much more as pre-existing conditions.

Congressman Tom Graves: No Financial Wizard

Congressman Tom Graves claims to be a champion of fiscal responsibility in Washington DC, yet he is attempting to invalidate his own defaulted bank loan worth $2.5 million here in his own state.

The Congressman’s unique argument? That the bank should have known he couldn’t repay the money, and that it is the bank’s fault for approving the loan in the first place.

The Chattanooga Times Free-Press reports that Graves and his business partner failed to pay on the debt for five months before the bank finally declared the loan in default. Coincidentally, Graves is advocating a path forward in DC that will cause the nation to default on its debt as well.

Tom Graves is no financial wizard. All Georgians should implore Congressman Graves to conduct the nation’s business better than he conducts his own.

Georgia “A Mess” Under Complete GOP control

Georgia – From tax dodges to undelivered subpoenas, the state of Georgia is in a mess unlike any the state has seen, contend loyal Democrats across the state.

The report of GOP House Speaker David Ralston’s house lien due to unpaid taxes is only the latest scandal in Georgia; his taxes have been late on this home for the past four years.

“It was reported earlier this month that subpoenas were about to be delivered to Governor Deal demanding his testimony under oath for ethical violations,” said Jeana Brown of Wayne County. “Instead, Republicans forced out the employee trying to deliver the subpoenas.”

Other under-reported scandals include:

  • Sen. Jack Murphy (R-Cumming), Senate Chairman of Banking and Financial Institutions, being sued for $70 million by the FDIC for his leadership in a failed bank. Georgia leads the nation in the number of failed banks.

  • State Senator Chip Rogers (R-Woodstock) and Congressman Tom Graves (R-Ranger) being sued in a business deal for $2.3 million from another failed bank.

  • Governor Nathan Deal (R-Gainesville) using campaign money to pay for legal fees related to a congressional ethics probe while running for Governor.

  • Congressman Tom Price (R-GA) using public funds to pay for a Tea Party event.

“Crops are rotting in the fields of south Georgia because no one is around to pick them,” said Dr. Lowell Greenbaum of Richmond County. “Georgia’s future is being cut short.”

“Republicans have made a mess,” said Eric Gray, Democratic Party of Georgia spokesperson. “Hall County might close nearly every public park on Lake Lanier, while State Rep. Bobby Franklin suggests that tornado-ravaged Georgians who request federal assistance are ‘worshipping a false god’”

“It’s hard to watch our proud state being torn apart,” concluded Gray.
