Democratic Party of Georgia LGBT Caucus on Marriage Equality

Atlanta, GA – Officers of the Democratic Party of Georgia LGBT Caucus issued the following statements today in response to the Supreme Court’s decision on Obergefell v. Hodges.

“We applaud the Supreme Court’s ruling affirming our basic right for marriage equality in all 50 states. The journey has been long but our perseverance has won the day. While we celebrate today’s ruling, we must also celebrate our local and national pioneers of the LGBTQ movement who laid the path. We express a special appreciation for our allies who worked with us side-by-side to make this day possible. As this day goes down in history for our community, we must remember we still have work to do, pushing forward to gain non-discrimination in all aspects of our life and pushing back against efforts to hinder our right to marry. This is a great way to end our Pride month and we encourage everyone to celebrate today—everyday—the diversity the LGBTQ community brings to our state and nation.” – Jim Taflinger, Chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia LGBT Caucus

“I can’t express how excited I am that SCOTUS ruled in our favor. This is a significant victory on the march to full equal protections. We will wake up tomorrow in a country where young people can expect that the love they share will be fully recognized by the state. Our focus now turns to non-discrimination legislation so that our community can fully enjoy rights afforded to others.” – Colton Griffin, Vice Chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia LGBT Caucus

DPG Statement on Marriage Equality

Release:  Friday, June 26, 2015

Democratic Party of Georgia Statement on Marriage Equality

Atlanta, GA – Democratic Party of Georgia Chair DuBose Porter issued the following statement today on the Supreme Court’s decision that effectively struck down Georgia’s ban on marriage equality.

“Today is a huge victory not only for advocates of marriage equality, but advocates of basic civil rights. This decision is the culmination of decades’ worth of battles fought to ensure that all families and the love they share are protected and treated equally under the law.

“While we have plenty of reason to celebrate, we still have work to do in Georgia. Until we have employment non-discrimination legislation on the books, LGBT workers can be fired just for being who they are. Our cities and counties have led the way on this issue, but the state remains on the wrong side of history. Love should never be a fireable offense, and I encourage state leaders to work together to forge a more equal and just Georgia.”

DPG Issues Statement on Marriage Equality

Release:  Tuesday, April 28, 2015

Democratic Party of GA Issues Statement on Marriage Equality

Atlanta, GA – Today, Democratic Party of Georgia LGBT Caucus Vice Chair Colton Griffin issued the following statement in the wake of news that the US Supreme Court heard arguments in Obergefell v. Hodges. The decision could decide the fate of marriage equality across the nation.

“For too long, tens of thousands of Georgians have been denied essential civil rights based solely on whom they love. Our state has gazed just across state lines for years as our neighbors in Florida, Alabama, and elsewhere have been afforded liberties that should be enjoyed by the LGBT community right here at home. Georgia Democrats have been outspoken in their support of equality for all families, yet Republicans have, at best, been silent on the issue—and at worst, propagated an environment of discrimination, hate, and fear.

“I, and many others, hold hope that the Supreme Court will decide in favor of equality, opportunity and progress. We are witnessing the shaping of a better nation. And I’m proud that the leadership of the Democratic Party of Georgia is on the right side of history.”
