STATEMENT: DPG Responds to SB 202 Passage Through Committee

March 22, 2021

Today, Georgia Republican lawmakers passed SB 202 out of the House Special Committee on Election Integrity following drastic, last-minute changes to the bill which would severely limit voter access to the ballot box, restrict absentee voting including access to drop boxes, and enforce a nearly impossible to implement runoff calendar. Scott Hogan, Executive Director of the Democratic Party of Georgia, released the following statement:

“Once again, Republican lawmakers are blindsiding Georgians by shoving last-minute voter suppression legislation through committee to avoid public scrutiny as they tear down our democratic systems. Last week, they turned a two-page bill into a 93-page omnibus bill chock-full of the worst of their anti-democratic, anti-voter proposals, then refused to release it to the public before its committee hearing today. Republican lawmakers don’t want to give Georgia voters the chance to fully analyze the bill because they know it will be seen for what it really is – modern day Jim Crow. Georgia Republicans truly have no shame in their anti-democracy politics or tactics, and they will be held accountable.”
