STATEMENT: Democratic Party of Georgia Responds to Passage of COVID-19 Relief Bill

February 27, 2021

Early this morning, Georgia Democratic Representatives Sanford Bishop, Carolyn Bourdeaux, Hank Johnson, Lucy McBath, David Scott, and Nikema Williams joined fellow congressional Democrats in passing much-needed direct relief payments for struggling Americans.

Not a single Georgia House Republican, however, voted for sending relief checks to Georgians, despite the fact that an overwhelming, bipartisan majority of Americans – including 60% of Republican voters – support the package.

“Georgia Republicans showed today just how little they care about working families. The direct payments that Democrats passed this morning will make a real, immediate difference in the lives of everyday Georgians, but the GOP chose political grandstanding over relief for their constituents,” said Maggie Chambers, spokeswoman for the Democratic Party of Georgia. “Come election time, Georgians will remember that when their livelihoods hung in the balance, Republicans played partisan games while Democrats fought to help them.”
