SHOT/CHASER: McConnell: “The Historical Precedent Is Overwhelming,” Loeffler: “Such a Precedent” Does Not Exist

September 23, 2020

SHOT: Days after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell claimed that “the historical precedent is overwhelming” to rush the confirmation of a Supreme Court justice for a lifetime appointment less than two months before the election, he was directly contradicted…

CHASER: …by unelected “political mega-donor” Senator Kelly Loeffler, who was forced to acknowledge while presiding over the Senate today that “such a precedent” does not exist:

LIME: No matter what Loeffler and McConnell claim, the reality is that thanks to the GOP’s reckless anti-health care lawsuit currently pending before the Supreme Court, this rushed nomination will create a “nightmare scenario” for the health care law in the middle of a global pandemic. 1.8 million Georgians with pre-existing conditions stand to lose health care protections if Loeffler and McConnell’s admittedly unprecedented power grab succeeds.

“President Trump and Senate Republicans’ reckless power grab puts Americans’ basic rights and the health care law at risk — all for an unprecedented rush to confirm a justice for a lifetime appointment mere weeks before Election Day,” said Alex Floyd, spokesman for the Democratic Party of Georgia.
