Atlanta, GA – Atlanta businessman and civil rights pioneer Herman J. Russell Sr. will be the next recipient of the John Lewis Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2014 Democratic Party of Georgia Jefferson-Jackson Dinner.

“Herman Russell’s life has been one defined by public service,” said Democratic Party of Georgia Chairman DuBose Porter. “Aside from his success in the private sector, perhaps his greatest accomplishments have been with the civil rights movement and his mission of providing affordable housing in Georgia. It is an honor to present the John Lewis Lifetime Achievement Award to such a distinguished businessman, philanthropist and community activist.”

The John Lewis Lifetime Achievement Award is reserved for those who have gone above and beyond in the quest to make Georgia a better state. The intended award recipient is someone whose outstanding contributions have benefited Georgia, not only through his or her own personal efforts for Georgia’s diverse citizenship, but also through his or her unwavering support of the ideals embodied in the Democratic Party of Georgia. This award honors those persons whose hard work and influence have broken down barriers so our great state continues to move forward in the hopes of fully realizing the dream of better tomorrow. Put simply, the John Lewis Award is for those who embody the award’s namesake—those who must be counted as the greatest of Georgia’s trailblazers.

In addition to welcoming Herman Russell to the Jefferson-Jackson dinner, the Democratic Party of Georgia expects other attendees include a contingent of Democratic Congressmen, State Senate and House leaders, Democratic candidates for statewide office, and the keynote speaker, James Carville.

The Jefferson-Jackson Dinner will be held Thursday, April 24 at the Georgia World Congress Center. Details for the event may be found here.
