Perdue, Senate Republicans Purposely Try To Halt COVID Economic Relief Fearing “Political Repercussions”

October 21, 2020

ATLANTA — Senator David Perdue has refused to speak out against Majority Leader Mitch McConnell after new reporting has revealed that McConnell warned that any deal they reach could disrupt their rushed plans to confirm Judge Barrett to the Supreme Court in time for oral arguments in the GOP lawsuit to overturn the health care law that protects people with pre-existing conditions one week after Election Day.

Today, McConnell put forward a sham vote that was no more than a stunt to give vulnerable Republicans talking points to use and claim they actually tried to do something to help millions of Americans desperately in need of Congress’ support.

This isn’t the first time Senator Perdue and Senate Republicans have intentionally failed to deliver on COVID economic relief to save their losing campaign bids despite hundreds of thousands of Georgians in need of relief from being out of work or without health care due to the Trump administration’s botched handling of the pandemic.

Earlier this year, Senator Perdue railed against much-needed economic relief and has refused to take responsibility for Republicans’ failed negotiations –– yet he’s been “proud to support” Republicans’ plan to rush through the confirmation of an anti-health care Supreme Court nominee less than one month out from opening arguments in the GOP’s lawsuit to overturn the health care law and its critical protections.

“Once again, Perdue and Senate Republicans are playing politics with people’s lives and in an attempted effort to save their election bids,” said Braxton Brewington, spokesman for the Democratic Party of Georgia. “Perdue should pass real COVID relief instead of playing politics, rushing through a Supreme Court confirmation process in the middle of an election, and serving as a rubber stamp for Mitch McConnell and President Trump.”
