ON THIS DAY: Collins Votes to Gut Health Care Law by Defunding Critical Programs and Protections

September 20, 2020

In addition to pushing for a rushed anti-health care judicial confirmation, Collins has voted for and supported attacks on the health care law and its protections for 1.8 million Georgians with pre-existing conditions

ATLANTA — As Congressman Doug Collins calls for the Senate to rush a lifetime Supreme Court appointment that puts the health care law “in greater danger than ever,” a reminder that seven years ago today, Collins stood behind House Republicans’ reckless push to defund the law and shut down the government.

Collins voted to completely defund the health care law, which would undermine coverage for millions and threaten the enforcement of critical health care protections for 1.8 million Georgians with pre-existing conditions. But Collins’ support of this disastrous push that led to one of the longest full government shutdowns in US history is only one part of a long record of his attacks on care.

Collins also previously voted multiple times in Congress to gut the health care law, and wants to “overcome” the law with a Republican-backed challenge that the Supreme Court is set to hear one week after Election Day to completely overturn the law and its critical protections.

“Congressman Doug Collins has a long history of working to undermine and gut the health care law — including his recent support for rushing a lifetime Supreme Court appointment through the Senate less than two months before an election,” said Alex Floyd, spokesman for the Democratic Party of Georgia. “With health care protections for 1.8 million Georgians with pre-existing conditions on the line in this election, Georgia families can’t trust Collins to protect their care in Congress.”
