NEW REPORT: Democratic Party of Georgia Outlines Path to Historic 2020 Election Cycle Wins

May 26, 2021

Today, the Democratic Party of Georgia released a new report recounting Democrats’ historic wins in Georgia during the 2020 election cycle and highlighting the core elements of the party’s successful electoral program. The report also outlines the continued path forward to victory for Georgia Democrats in 2022 as we work to defend Senator Rev. Raphael Warnock’s seat, flip statewide offices, and win even more seats in the state legislature.

The report cites four key building blocks of DPG’s winning infrastructure and strategy:

  • Organize year-round and compete everywhere.
  • Engage a wide and diverse coalition of voters.
  • Strengthen voter turnout across the board.
  • Invest in a world-class voter protection program.

Among Georgia Democrats’ wins in the 2020 election cycle:

  • First Democratic presidential candidate to win Georgia since Bill Clinton in 1992, and the best Democratic presidential candidate performance in Georgia since Jimmy Carter in 1980.
  • Flipped Georgia’s two U.S. Senate seats and secured the Democratic Senate majority in electing Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, the first two Democratic wins in a federal statewide runoff election in Georgia’s history.
  • The only state where Democrats flipped a U.S. House seat in 2020 with the election of Carolyn Bourdeaux in the seventh congressional district.
  • The only state where Democrats picked up at least one seat in both the State House and State Senate in 2020.

“From the beginning, Georgia Democrats said that the road to victory in 2020 would run right through our state. This report tells the story of those victories,” said Congresswoman Nikema Williams, Chairwoman of the Democratic Party of Georgia. “Now, with Senator Rev. Warnock’s seat along with the entire statewide slate on the ballot in 2022, Georgia Democrats are positioned to build on our successes; grow our investments in organizing, voter protection, and coalition-building; and change Georgia for good. We are just getting started.”

“This report makes clear that Democrats’ wins in 2020 and 2021 were not flukes – Georgia Democrats and organizers across our state had been building towards this moment for years.” said Scott Hogan, Executive Director of the Democratic Party of Georgia. “The lesson from Georgia is that Democrats can no longer afford to wait to build up their infrastructure until the months before Election Day. Especially as Republicans across the country step up their anti-voting agenda, we must fight hard, build fast, and present a strong, strategic front ready to compete across the country in 2022.”
