“Kemp stands shoulder-to-shoulder with one of the state’s top election deniers.”
While Gov. Brian Kemp tried to gain praise for doing the bare minimum of any elected official by refusing to break the law and overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia, he has never rebuked Donald Trump, his seditious false electors, or the anti-voter lies that are at the foundation of the national assault on democracy. Now, Kemp is trying to win the favor of the same people accused of seeking to overturn the 2020 election — new reporting by The Bulwark notes that Kemp’s campaign strategy “has been guided by one principle: Make nice with MAGA.”
Kemp’s embrace of election denier Burt Jones — who was intimately involved in the plot to overturn the election and is now a target of a criminal investigation — represents just one of Kemp’s many moves to court MAGA supporters. The governor also used the powers of his office to spearhead anti-voter legislation which resulted in Georgia becoming one of the first states to pass an anti-voter law, SB 202, which Kemp recently admitted he signed into law because he was “frustrated” with Democrats winning in 2020.
Kemp has also refused to criticize Trump and fought a subpoena to testify against him in the Fulton County election interference probe — all while he seeks the former President’s endorsement.
