ICYMI: Georgia Democrats Launch New Website Highlighting Kemp’s Election-Year Hypocrisy on American Rescue Plan-Funded Projects

May 16, 2022

Last week, as Brian Kemp signed the state budget, the Democratic Party of Georgia launched KempDoesntCare.com, a new website highlighting Kemp’s hypocrisy on President Biden and Democrats’ American Rescue Plan. Kemp urged Georgia’s U.S. Senators to oppose the American Rescue Plan and called it a “slap in the face,” but he’s been quick to try and take credit for the benefits it delivered to Georgians – including its boost to the state budget and $415 million just announced today in federal relief dollars that will go towards addressing economic impacts of COVID-19.

Georgia’s budget is fueled by “massive federal COVID-19 relief funding” according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Democrats’ American Rescue Plan sent billions to Georgia, boosting state revenues and the state budget.

What Georgians are seeing as Kemp signs the state budget:

  • FOX 5 Atlanta’s Claire Simms: As the governor took a victory lap, the Democratic Party of Georgia pushed back, launching a new website called KempDoesntCare.com to highlight the fact that the governor opposed the American Rescue Plan which funneled billions of dollars of federal relief money into the state.

  • One of the reasons the state has been so flush with tax money to spend in recent years is the massive amount of federal COVID relief funding Georgians and governments have received. Democrats say Kemp and other Republican leaders have conveniently ignored that in their regular touting of state finances.
  • “After calling Democrats’ American Rescue Plan a ‘slap in the face for hardworking Georgians,’ Brian Kemp is hypocritically trying to take credit because he thinks it will help his chances of re-election,” said Max Flugrath, spokesman for the Democratic Party of Georgia. “When it comes to criticizing and then trying to take credit for Democrats’ work, Kemp doesn’t care about his blatant hypocrisy as long as he thinks it’ll help his political career.”

  • Kemp said state coffers are flush with enough money to cover the various spending increases because he reopened Georgia’s economy earlier than many other states during the early months of the pandemic.
  • But Democrats attributed the additional spending to the availability of federal funds from the American Rescue Plan a Democratic-controlled Congress passed shortly after President Joe Biden took office last year.
  • “After calling Democrats’ American Rescue Plan a ‘slap in the face for hardworking Georgians,’ Brian Kemp is hypocritically trying to take credit because he thinks it will help his chances of reelection,” said Max Flugrath, spokesman for the Democratic Party of Georgia.
