ICYMI: Georgia Democrats Host Virtual Press Conference Ahead of GA GOP Convention

June 3, 2021

Today, the Democratic Party of Georgia was joined by Democratic leaders Atlanta, Savannah, Macon, and Augusta for a virtual press conference ahead of the Georgia GOP’s annual convention. Speakers highlighted how Democrats are fighting for working families while Republicans are too caught up in messy internal politics and more focused on subverting our democracy than delivering for Georgians.

You can watch the full press conference here, and find speaker quotes below.

“The fact of the matter is that only one party in this state right now is delivering for the people, and that is the Democratic Party,” said Congresswoman Nikema Williams, Chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia. “A healthy democracy should have two political parties competing for votes based on ideas, not one party so scared of their constituents that they’re changing the rules of our democracy to try to stay in power. While the Georgia GOP circus is on full display this weekend, Georgia Democrats will continue putting in the work to make people’s lives better, because that’s what we were elected to do.”

“I think it’s strange for Republicans to come to the Georgia coast to sell their agenda to voters when they have done nothing the past year to actually help this region of the state or Georgia as a whole,” said Savannah Mayor Van Johnson. “The GOP has let Georgians down again and again – Republican leaders are clinging to conspiracy theories and voter suppression instead of focusing on helping working Georgians. The far-right extremes of the Republican Party have now become the mainstream of the Republican Party. And now, Georgia Republicans have the audacity to ask to be elected after refusing to stand up to protect our democracy.”

“The Republican Party has no agenda to actually help Georgians – we saw that this past year under the Gold Dome,” said State Representative James Beverly, Minority Leader of the Georgia House of Representatives. “After losing both Senate seats, Republicans’ answer was not to try to figure out how to talk to the general public – their answer was to introduce SB 202, perhaps the most racist voter suppression bill in my generation. Why? They know they’re in a dying space and have no real ideas.”

“We have seen Georgia Republicans spend the better part of the last year making a mockery of our democracy. This is the difference between Georgia Democrats and Georgia Republicans – Democrats are actually working every day to get Georgia and our country back on track,” said Augusta-Richmond County Commissioner Jordan Johnson. “It’s important to understand that conspiracy theories don’t pay the bills. Conspiracy theories don’t get folks back to work. Conspiracy theories don’t keep folks out of hospitals. Facts and hard work do. Instead of feeding into conspiracy theories, Democrats have been rolling up our sleeves and staying focused on the real issues that matter to the people of this state.”
