Georgia Families Receive Third Round of Tax Cuts Today Thanks to President Biden and Democrats

Today, 91% of Georgia families with children will begin receiving the third installment of tax cuts from the Child Tax Credit program thanks to President Biden and Democrats’ American Rescue Plan — and no thanks to Georgia Republicans, who unanimously opposed the tax cuts. Senators Reverend Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff joined Representatives Bishop, Bourdeaux, Johnson, McBath, Scott, and Williams to deliver one of the largest-ever single-year tax cuts for families with children in history, which experts predict will lift 171,000 children out of poverty in Georgia alone.

Since the distribution of the first round of tax cuts in July, child hunger has dropped 24 percent nationwide. Experts predict that the Child Tax Credit program will reduce the state’s overall child poverty rate from 13.6% to 5.9% and that the Black child poverty rate will decrease even further from 21.8% to 11.4%. Across Georgia, these tax cuts are helping families fend off eviction, pay utility bills and back rent, buy groceries and school supplies, and cover other expenses.

“Today, millions of Georgia families will receive the third middle-class tax cut from the Child Tax Credit program thanks to President Joe Biden and Democrats. I’ve seen firsthand how these life changing tax cuts are already making an impact for Georgians who need it most,” Congresswoman Nikema Williams, Chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia, said. “It is indefensible that every Georgia Republican — from Brian Kemp to the entire GOP Senate field — opposed this financial lifeline for Georgia families. Now is the time for Republicans to put aside their partisan political games to support the President’s agenda and extend the middle-class tax cuts permanently.”
