Democratic Party of Georgia Statement on Campus Carry Veto

Atlanta, GA – Today, Democratic Party of Georgia Executive Director Rebecca DeHart issued the following statement on Gov. Deal’s veto of House Bill 859—campus carry legislation that would have allowed individuals over the age of 21 to carry concealed firearms on most places on public college campuses.

“Georgia’s students, teachers, faculty, and activists deserve much praise for fighting this ill-advised legislation. Georgians stood together to work toward making our campuses safer environments.

“Republicans owe our students so much more than what they delivered this legislative session. HOPE remains painfully underfunded, leaving too many young people with mountains of student loan debt. And our state has all but given up on strengthening our vocational and technical schools.

“Georgia Democrats hope that next year’s session will yield more productive legislation aimed at young people than the election year stunts we were given by the Georgia GOP in 2016.”
