DPG Chair Nikema Williams Statement on the Passing of Former Senator Leroy Johnson

ATLANTA – Today, Democratic Party of Georgia Chair Nikema Williams issued the following statement on the passing of former Senator Leroy Johnson: 

“I am sad to hear of the loss of former state senator Leroy Johnson, a man who led in his community, and broke barriers in the Georgia Senate as the first black State Senator to be elected after Reconstruction. Senator Johnson paved the way for black Georgians, including me, to rightfully take our place in the halls of the Gold Dome and represent our communities, unapologetically, at a time when that work seemed impossible. Georgia is a better, more inclusive state thanks to his service.”
