Last night, Donald Trump hosted a high-dollar, closed-door fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago for Herschel Walker, his personal friend and handpicked candidate in Georgia’s GOP Senate primary. While Walker “didn’t say much at the event” hosted for him, consistent with how he’s been running his “closed-door” campaign, he did call Trump the “greatest president to ever, ever hold office” — smiling silently in the background as Trump again spread debunked conspiracy theories about his 2020 election loss and teased another run in 2024.
Walker’s poolside, mega-donor fundraising event in Florida came just hours after Trump once again blasted current Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and encouraged a “good Republican” to mount a primary challenge against the sitting governor. Walker has been totally silent on whether he’ll support the embattled governor for re-election, even after supporting Kemp in his 2018 bid.
“Walker has said more about Donald Trump than he has about any of the issues Georgians care about, and again stood by while the former president lied about our elections and spread dangerous mistruths,” said Dan Gottlieb, spokesman for the Democratic Party of Georgia. “Georgians know the truth: Walker will never stand up for them, just like he isn’t standing up to Trump to tell him he’s wrong.”
